Elizabeth's Winter Empties!
It takes a special type of person to actually finish a product in its entirety. I’m not that person, but I wish I was. I confess, I am the type of person to never finish a product, I tend to get bored or just buy new stuff so I end up having half empty bottles and makeup products all over the place. Buuuut I actually made it happen, and I’ve never been prouder of myself. Can I please get a round of applause?
I’ve been hoarding these empty containers and wrappings for a while just so I could write this piece. A lot of these products I’ve talked about before, and some I’ve just mentioned here and there. This post has a mix of both skincare and makeup products. I stand by all of these products, and these are products I can totally see myself repurchasing.
This toner is really amazing, it’s the one toner I’ve used consistently and had amazing results with. It contains Italian sparkling water that helps provide a ton of hydration and controls oil production.
How I used this: This toner is so light, it was all I needed in San Diego. When I moved to WA, as much as I loved this toner, it wasn’t cutting it but I wasn’t ready to phase it out. Instead, I started layering toners and used this as a first toner and began to see even better results. I recommend using this toner as a summer toner or layering it during the winter.
I just love this mask, which if you follow our Instagram account, I’m sure you’ve seen it splashed all over our feed. In general, I’m a huge fan of the E-Nature Birch Juice line and have yet to try a product I don’t immediately love. This pack contains 74% birch juice and will restore hydration overnight. After using this, your skin will visibly look brighter. I’ve gone through 3 jars of this product, and will be ordering more when I run out again,
How I used this: I use this about once or twice a week in lieu of a moisturizer during my nighttime routine. Be sure to wash it off in the morning by double cleansing.
This product is a holy grail product for both Jane and I. This is one of the products that I saw immediate results with after just one use. This is This product contains 20.5% Vitamin C and 72% black chokeberry to hydrate skin, fight pigmentation and brighten complexion.
How I used this: This was my first serum, so I started using this by combining a few drops with my moisturizer. After two weeks, I put the drops directly on my face after applying essence. I messed up and didn’t store this serum properly, so it became oxidized pretty quickly. Make sure to store it in the fridge or a dark, cool place!
This product contains 70% birch sap which I am so here for. According to Soko Glam, this lotion was developed to work in conjunction with the COSRX AHA and BHA exfoliators. I personally use the BHA exfoliator, and I have to say, this moisturizer compliments that product well. In general, this moisturizer is a very versatile product that I believe goes well with a ton of different products. This product calms and hydrates the skin, and does not leave behind any oily residue. It’s super light, so it absorbs very quickly and it’s fragrance free.
How I used it: Since this is a very light product, it’s perfect for warmer weather (like in San Diego!) but for colder weather, I would recommend layering it.
This product did not work for Jane so she gave it to me. Fortunately, I had much better results with this product. This SPF provides full protection without leaving behind any oily residue. It contains tea tree extract to mattify without drying, which is awesome and rose extract to protect against the environment. Be warned, this product is highly fragranced, so be careful if you’re sensitive to fragrance.
How I used it: I used this as the last step of my routine, but reapplied throughout the day. It works best if you pat it on instead of smoothing over your face. Make sure to cover your neck as well!
After I finished my MISSHA SPF, I switched to the COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50/PA+++ because the aloe vera in this product would be ideal for dry skin. I had been experiencing drier than normal skin, and I really needed an SPF that wouldn’t dry my skin out. This SPF definitely delivered, and I’m a huge fan. It’s also not as fragrant as the MISSHA one, which also makes this a good fit for anyone that is sensitive to fragrance.
How I used it: Used as a last step to my routine but unlike the MISSHA one, this went on a little better if you smoothed it over your face instead of patting.
This is the first set of oil cleanser/foam cleanser that I tried when I started double cleansing. I like to think of these two products as good “starter” products for double cleansing. The oil is naturally fragranced and removes dirt really well. The cleanser creates a really good lather and doesn’t make your face feel stripped or overly dried. I definitely recommend these together as an intro to double cleansing.
How I used it: I used the oil cleanser first to remove dirt and makeup from my face, and then rinsed with warm water. I followed up with the foam cleanser to remove any remaining oil or dirt.
When I started using this cleanser, I absolutely loved it but it ended up not working so great for me once I started experiencing colder weather. I definitely recommend this cleanser if you live in warmer temperature or during the summer, it gently cleanses your face but in the winter, it tends to strip your face more than you would want it to. I like this cleanser, I just wish it held up a little bit better during the winter.
How I used it: After oil cleansing, I used this as the second step in double cleansing.
I tried this cleanser because it had awesome reviews and at first, I really loved it. However, just like with the Goodal cleanser the second the weather got colder it really began to dry my face out and it just was not working for me afterwards. Recently, Skinfood reformulated this cleanser so I’m excited to try it out to see how the newer formula holds up.
How I used it: After oil cleansing, I used this as the second step in double cleansing.
This solid balm really is a classic for oil cleansing, and I can’t get enough of this particular one. Personally, I find the solid balm really soothing to use and it’s super lightweight and melts quickly. It contains papaya which is a natural exfoliant but don’t worry, your face won’t feel stripped.
How I used it: I used this as the first step in double cleansing, before my foam cleanser.
I like to think of this scrub as a holy grail product because it’s not super expensive, it’s super effective and it lasts for a while. This is such a good manual exfoliant because the sugar is fine enough that it won’t cause micro tears in your skin but you’ll get a good exfoliation from it. It’s also made of natural ingredients, so you don’t have to worry about artificial fragrances, colors or chemicals.
How I used it: I used this as a manual exfoliant about once a week after I double cleansed but before toning.
This was the first essence I tried and I’m currently on my second can. Bee venom is an ingredient that’s effective to clean pores and sanitizes your skin. I love this mist because it’s easy to use, you can layer it and it really clears up your complexion. It absorbs fairly quickly, so if you use it as a first essence you don’t add too much time to your normal routine.
How I used it: I used it after toning as my first step essence before applying a thicker essence.
Jane and I are both Colourpop addicts, we love how you can get high quality products for such a low price. I cannot begin to describe how much I love this lipstick. This particular formula gives you a blotted look, that looks natural and hints at the fact that you have lipstick on. Zuma is a warm nude that I think is a universal color, and looks amazing on anyone.
Colourpop’s super shock shadows are super creamy and pigmented. If you’re trying to get into using more eyeshadow, I recommend trying these out because they’re cost effective and relatively easy to use. Sunset Blvd was part of the Kaepop line, and unfortunately, is no longer made (*cries in Spanish*). Melrose is a matte mauve eyeshadow, which is awesome for any day or fall look.
This pencil is super creamy and is an easy way to highlight your brows. The matte is great for an everyday look and the shimmer end gives you an extra pop for any day or night look. It blends super well and I think they’re great for any skin tone because of how blendable they are.
I wanted to love this pencil so bad, but I just couldn’t. I used the product in its entirety because I had already bought it, but it really did not work for me. First, it’s very pink which wouldn’t be a big deal if it wasn’t so hard to blend. Second, the packaging is very cheap and it constantly broke and was very hard to sharpen. Lastly, you really couldn’t tell if your brows were highlighted or not after using it, so either way I would end up putting a shimmery eyeshadow or concealer to highlight my brows. It’s possible that I didn’t know how to use this correctly, so if you’ve used this and love it I would love to hear how you used it!
You can’t beat a $6 setting spray that will protect your look to the death. This setting spray has never let me down, my makeup looks flawless at the end of the day or night after using this. I’ve worked out, wiped my face and my makeup is still there. I’ve gone into a pool and my makeup is still there. Do yourself a favor and invest in this setting spray! Unfortunately, Colourpop does not have the Aventurine one in stock but they have the other ones available!
This primer is the GOAT of eyelid primers. This primer will keep your shadow in place without even breaking a sweat. It’s a nude matte which will dry clear so anyone can use this. It also doesn’t feather or crease, so your eyeshadow will go on smooth and flawless. It’s a little pricey, but well worth the investment because a little goes a long way. I’ve used the same little bottle every day for 6 months now.
If you want eyeliner so sharp it can cut someone, I recommend this eyeliner. This has a brush tip (not felt) which is super easy to use and creates a flawless line. The formula is super pigmented and long lasting, without smearing.
f you want long, luscious eyelashes this mascara is the way to go. It’s long lasting and doesn’t smear, even though it’s not waterproof. You don’t even need primer or anything, your eyelashes will look amazing after using this. Combine this with the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner and you’ll never go back.
I could go on and on about this highlighter, and I’m so sad it’s gone. One swipe with this highlighter, and you’re glowing. It’s so pigmented and blendable, you will look flawless after using this product. The best part of this product is that gives you a dewy, glowy look without looking glittery. It’s subtle enough to use every day or you can put on two layers for a night out.
I’ve been trying to spring clean, so writing this piece is strangely relaxing because now I can throw these containers away! I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts about any of these products if you’ve used them!
