Benton Campaign

We were lucky enough to be selected for yet a third campaign for Benton! This time, we were able to try their Cacao Moist and Mild Toner. The testing period for me was shorter this time as I wasn’t able to put it into my routine long term at the time of this review, but I will update my review accordingly. Spoiler alert: Elizabeth and I have been loving all of Benton’s products so far and they’ve become one of my favorite brands due to their simple but effective formulations.

About the Brand

Benton is a cruelty-free brand with its namesake deriving from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, whereas the main character ages in reverse. The brand focuses on restoring skin to its healthy, original condition by using clean ingredients instead of harmful ones. They create their products in small batches to ensure freshness is kept in tact.

About Benton’s Cacao Moist and Mlid Toner

The Cacao Moist and Mild Toner is the newest product in Benton’s “Moist and Mild” Collection (see Elizabeth’s review on the sister serum here). The toner is intended to be used as the first step after cleansing in order to provide moisture and hydration to the skin. It’s great for sensitive skin as it is free from artificial fragrance and alcohol. The toner also contains one of our favorite humectants, hyaluronic acid, and a high cacao content to nourish and keep skin smooth while maintaining a natural glow.

Benton recommends this toner for oily skin, dehydrated skin, sensitive, and dull skin. The toner provides a balance of mild hydration, a clear skin tone, and nourishing ingredients.

Ingredients

The key ingredients in this toner are of course, derivatives of cacao: cacao extract, cacoa seed extract, and cacao flower extract. Cacao extracts are rich in antioxidants and moisturizing properties. I haven’t used many products with cacao but its origins trace] back to the Mayans, who used it to nourish their bodies with its rich nutrients and minerals; it does the same to nourish and moisturize skin!

Some other ingredients I was pleased to find in this toner are madecassoside and willow bark extract. Madecassoside is a compound found within centella asiatica which has excellent healing and skin regenerating properties. Willow bark is a star for oily skin, as it contains salicylic acid and is a natural BHA chemical exfoliant. Also, we can’t forget hyaluronic acid when it comes moisture retention, since it holds more than 1000 times its weight in water.

Full ingredients list:

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract, Aqua (Water), Butylene Glycol, Pentylene Glycol, Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Salix Nigra (Willow) Bark Extract, Madecassoside, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Flower Extract, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Betaine, Xanthan Gum

According to COSDNA the only acne trigger is butylene glycol (1) used as a moisturizing agent and solvent. All ingredients have an EWG hazard score of 1.

I would say it’s suitable for all skin types and all seasons, but especially for oily, dehydrated, or sensitive skin.

Scent

There is no added fragrance in this product but I do detect a naturally derived, slightly sweet scent. This may be due to the presence of the extract from the cacao flower. In my opinion, the scent is negligible and non-irritating.

Texture

Very lightweight, water-like consistency. Due to its fluid property, it spreads easily and absorbs quickly into the skin. It is perfect for layering, as it dries to a non-sticky finish. It’s very similar in consistency to Benton’s High Content Skin if you’ve tried that before (I love it).

Packaging

The toner comes in a good sized 150ml sturdy plastic bottle. The design is beautiful and happens to be one of my favorite colors. It is easy to dispense the liquid from the bottle.

Use

Benton recommends the toner to be applied with a cotton pad, however, you can also pour it directly into your hands and pat it into your skin. I applied it during my morning and nighttime routine after cleansing. It is very comfortable to layer and would be perfect to use for the 7 Skin method.

Before and after applying the toner.

Overall Thoughts

My skin was recovering from a breakout prior to this testing period so I was only able to try this product for about a week. Thus, my initial impression is that this is an awesome lightweight, hydrating toner. It reminds me a lot of Benton’s High Content Skin (one of my favorite toners) but with a more pleasant, natural scent.

I love how there is no alcohol or added fragrance in this formula so it won’t dry out or irritate my acne-prone, sensitive skin. It is a perfect, mild hydrator which can be layered depending on how much moisture I need that day.

It will take time to see results but my skin feels clean and adequately moisturized after applying this toner. I have no cons to mention, other than it might not be hydrating enough for the drier skin types, but for me I see myself use it year round and adding layers depending on my skin’s needs. It is ideal to use for the 7 Skin method, and I typically do 1-3 layers in my routine.

Rating

Benton is a solid brand and I’ve enjoyed every product from Benton that I’ve tried so far; this toner is no different. I love its simple but powerful ingredients list and can already tell my oily, acne-prone skin is happy with this toner. It’s refreshing and hydrating, but lightweight enough to layer and can be used year round. I’ll be sure to update in the future with my long term results.

For my overall first impression of this product, I give it a solid 4/5 stars!

Where to buy

You can purchase Benton’s Moist and Mild Toner from Benton’s EBay storefront here. At the time of this post it is on sale for only $13.50, which is a steal for this amount and quality of product. Benton always ships free samples with its products as well.
